Mugen (stylized as M.U.G.E.N) is a freeware 2D fighting game engine designed by Elecbyte. Content is created by the community, and thousands of fighters, both original and from popular fiction, have been created. It is written in C and originally used the Allegro library. The latest versions of the engine use the SDL library.

I.K.E.M.E.N (short for Itsumademo Kanseishinai Eienni Mikansei ENgine) is a free and open-source fighting game engine designed to be compatible with M.U.G.E.N content, while also expanding on its feature set to allow for more flexible customization. The engine is notable for introducing stage zoom prior to the release of the M.U.G.E.N 1.1 beta, and for allowing netplay matches, a feature that is not supported in any official build of M.U.G.E.N.

Rivals of Aether is an indie platform fighter video game created by Dan Fornace, and released for Microsoft Windows in March 2017, for Xbox One in August 2017, and for Nintendo Switch on September 24, 2020. It received positive reception from critics, who commended its deep gameplay. Rivals of Aether is the spiritual sequel to Super Smash Land, a fan-made remake of Super Smash Bros., and therefore its gameplay mechanics are heavily based on the latter game. Each character must try to knock the others out of a two-dimensional arena. In addition to fighting game-style moves, characters can also use elemental-based attacks or passive abilities that also affect the stage. This creates a meta game of not only attacking other players but also affecting the arena itself. Gameplay in general favors offense more than defense compared to Smash Bros.; attacks can only be blocked by executing a timed “parry” rather than holding up a shield, and characters cannot safely grab edges when returning to the stage.

Street Fighter, commonly abbreviated as SF or スト (Suto), is a Japanese media franchise centered on a series of fighting video and arcade games developed and published by Capcom. The first game in the series was released in 1987, followed by six other main series games, various spin-offs and crossovers, and numerous appearances in other media. Its best-selling 1991 release Street Fighter II established many of the conventions of the one-on-one fighting genre. Street Fighter is one of the highest-grossing video game franchises of all time and is one of Capcom’s flagship series with total sales of 48 million units worldwide as of June 2022. It is the highest-grossing fighting game media franchise of all time at US$12.2 billion, including 500,000 arcade unit sales.

  1. There is a good amount of polish in some games, like CvS3 and Hyper DBZ

  2. Bro took “Everyone’s Here” to a Whole New Level

  3. @4:10 , I was hoping to see some of my creations in the video but sadly I did not… HOWEVER I did see you included a scroll by of my original baby. Mugen Free For All! Wooo! Keep up the good work guys!

  4. HEY MAN THIS SUPERMAN OF THUMB IS MUGEN PROJECT ?

  5. This takes me back, I used to spend all day making characters and moves growing up lol

  6. MUGEN will live forever
even if it doesn't get more updates, meaby one day some people will find a way to make a new version, because people LOVE IT so much
myself included since i pretty much make character, stages, screenpacks everything

  7. Awesome video, exactly what I was searching for! Did you ever host that stream with the CPU fights???

  8. Yo, what is the name of the ice mugen stage ? looks pretty good !

  9. I actually have a 3GB mugen game with Marvel and DC characters all with accurate stats like strength and speed, watching Superman and Juggernaut fight is NUTS.

  10. Holy moly did I just see MC Chris as a Mugen character? Infinite, indeed.

  11. The betting on CPU vs CPU fights is something I definitely never expected nor knew about!

  12. Am I the only person bothered by the way he pronounced DOS? You say it like "Doss", you don't spell it out. 😭

  13. You having spelled out MS-DOS shook me to my core! Like, there's no real reason you should know that it's spoken as "MS Doss", which makes me feel old as fuck. DOS was already old as fuck by the time I was a kid using the internet/PCs, but it's sphere of influence was still potent enough that you heard about it, but I suppose most of that has worn off years ago. Don't turn 28, man.

  14. Sorry but the first winmugen beta didnt have a roster limit, you can still check for yourself. In fact it allowed an even more roster than dos and linux mugen; when winmugen plus came out the major improvements were related to the aspect ratio rather than characters limit

  15. It's crazy to think that I have been playing mugen with my friends since 2006. We used to have parties back when I was in high school and everyone was always excited about the new characters I added each week. Then after a while I got into coding and started doing my own character edits. This is the fighting game I always end up going back to because the various crossover matches you can do and lets not forget the memes lol

  16. Ronald McDonald is the face of M.U.G.E.N. I swear. 😂

  17. Lol at "m s d os". Youe supposed to say "dos", lie it rhymes with "boss"

  18. Nice video and story though. You should do a story about a game called Subspace a online only 2D spaceship combat game from the 90s. It is a little similar to Mugen in that it was originally published by a company and sold commercially. It was soon abandoned but revived through the fan community using a hacked version of the game server and client. It is still going 25 years later. Although the community has dwindled instead of growing stronger like Mugen.

  28. What's the name of the first game in the beginning of the vid?

  29. This is a really good video that explains Mugen. I’ve made so many different games out of the engine. From a Smash Bros Type Game to my own Street Fighter II Game that celebrates the 90s era of fighting games. I’m so glad that it’s gotten a bit of a renaissance as of late, and I’m all for it.

  30. I was a creator for MUGEN around 2001. I really love this game engine and the community. Unfortunate life events left me without a PC for about 5 years, and I never quite got back into it. I love watching the engine and the community evolve and grow, and occasionally binge MUGEN related content on Youtube because it is so fun to watch.

Excited at the idea of netcode. That makes it a lot more likely for me to try my hand at creation again.

  31. I haven't played Mugen in over 20 years, but a random YouTube recommendation reminded me of its brilliance. And now this feels like a nice retrospective for a brief time in my life where I loved mish mashing different fighters from different games into one.

  32. the fact you pronounce Dos as D-O-S really shows how young you are.

  33. This sounds fun to play. I'm gonna play as Sonic and fight GF.

  34. This game will never die, love it

  35. Wait….this was a regular fighting game?

  36. this is the same game as i saw with peter vs homer. ima look foward to playing it

  37. Mugen is the poster boy of underrated man, how does something as packed as this not be popular?

  38. I love this not a game that exists fighting game!

  39. If you Want a tournament, i highly reccomend searching the author "Most_Mysterious" in the mugen archive. He created many of the funniest characters, i think theyre still funny in 2023/2024 even though theyre outdated, i also reccomend
-Phycopath kyo (sorry if i misspeled it)
    -Trouble man, part 2
    -Dee Bee Kaw
    -Nanarman
    -Greenman
    -Seinosuke
-Marshall 12p (this one might blow your mind)
